In 2009, President Barack Obama promised the most transparent administration in U.S. history. Yet, according to Tom Fitton’s “Clean House: Exposing Our Government’s Secrets and Lies,” the reality was starkly different.
Fitton, president of the government watchdog group Judicial Watch, meticulously documents how the Obama administration became synonymous with secrecy, stonewalling, and political manipulation. Through thousands of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, Judicial Watch uncovered a pattern of obstruction, revealing scandals that shook public trust in government accountability.
When Obama took office, his pledge for openness was met with optimism. However, Fitton’s book reveals that the administration’s actions often contradicted its rhetoric. Judicial Watch filed over 3,000 FOIA requests during Obama’s tenure, many of which were ignored or met with resistance.
“The Obama administration’s approach to transparency was more about optics than action,” Fitton writes. “They talked a good game, but when it came to delivering, they fell short.”
This lack of transparency extended to critical issues, including the 2012 Benghazi attack, where four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens, were killed. Judicial Watch’s relentless pursuit of the truth uncovered a “smoking gun” email from then-White House Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes. The email instructed officials to portray the attack as a spontaneous protest rather than a premeditated terrorist act.
One of the book’s most damning sections focuses on Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while serving as Secretary of State. Judicial Watch’s investigations revealed that Clinton conducted official business on an unsecured server, potentially exposing classified information. The administration delayed disclosing the server’s existence until the 2016 presidential campaign was well underway.
“The Obama administration went to great lengths to shield Clinton from scrutiny,” Fitton writes. “They withheld key emails and dragged their feet on document production, all while claiming transparency.”
Judicial Watch’s lawsuits forced the release of thousands of emails, leading to an FBI investigation and the specter of criminal charges. Fitton argues that the scandal underscores the dangers of unchecked government power.
Another scandal detailed in “Clean House” is Operation Fast and Furious, a botched Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) operation that allowed guns to flow into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. The operation resulted in the deaths of hundreds, including U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. Fitton reveals how the Obama administration attempted to cover up its involvement, even invoking executive privilege to withhold documents from Congress.
The book also delves into the IRS targeting scandal, where conservative groups were singled out for scrutiny. Judicial Watch’s investigations uncovered evidence of political bias within the agency, with officials like Lois Lerner, head of the Exempt Organizations Division, orchestrating the targeting.
“The IRS was weaponized to silence dissent,” Fitton writes. “This wasn’t just a bureaucratic blunder; it was a deliberate attack on free speech.” Despite the evidence, the Obama administration downplayed the scandal and avoided holding anyone accountable. “The lack of accountability was staggering,” Fitton notes. “It sent a clear message: if you’re part of the political establishment, you’re above the law.”
Fitton also examines the Obama administration’s approach to immigration, highlighting its reluctance to enforce border security and its efforts to provide administrative amnesty to undocumented immigrants. Judicial Watch’s investigations revealed a pattern of prioritizing political expediency over national security.
“The administration’s policies put Americans at risk,” Fitton writes. “They ignored the dangers posed by criminal elements and potential terrorists crossing the border.” The book underscores the need for a secure and comprehensive border policy, free from political interference. “Immigration is a complex issue, but it must be addressed with honesty and integrity,” Fitton argues. “Anything less is a betrayal of the public trust.”
Judicial Watch emerges as a tireless advocate for transparency and accountability. Fitton’s work is a testament to the power of citizen activism and the importance of a free press.
“Government accountability isn’t a given,” he writes. “It’s something we have to fight for every day.”
“Clean House” is more than a book; it’s a rallying cry for a government that serves its people, not its own interests. For anyone concerned about the state of democracy, Fitton’s revelations are both a warning and a roadmap for change.
