House Homeland Security Committee (HSC) Chairman Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) said he has evidence of “potential fraud” allegedly committed by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas that could serve as the first step toward the latter’s impeachment.
He disclosed this in a May 11 exclusive interview with the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF). Green told the outlet that he has confidential sources that shared information about Mayorkas’ alleged fraud, but refused to divulge further details.
“We’ve got some people that are sharing some information with us that there’s potential fraud,” the Tennessee congressman said. “We’re going to look very hard at all of these things, prepare a packet [and] show it to the American people.”
“If it warrants impeachment, we’ll hand it off to [House Judiciary Committee] Chairman [Jim] Jordan (R-OH). I think it will, based on the information I know.”
Several House Republicans, including Texas Rep. Pat Fallon and Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs, earlier filed articles of impeachment against Mayorkas. However, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has yet to move ahead with formal drive to impeach the head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).(Related: Group of House Republicans call for impeaching DHS chief Mayorkas over record illegal immigration, drug smuggling.)
Nevertheless, Green said he would be willing to create an impeachment case against the secretary. He told the DCNF: “I’m quite alright owning that responsibility and doing it. But, when we’re done with that, my gut tells me it’s [going to] be enough for him to not be in the job.”
“I think if he fails to enforce the laws written in the books – that, in and of itself, is enough for [Mayorkas] to be removed. He is in the executive branch. He doesn’t get to make the laws, we do. And if he can’t enforce and live by the Constitution, why is he a cabinet secretary?”
Three days later on May 14, Green said Mayorkas’ “dereliction of duty” will be “closely” examined by his committee.
“I have been very careful not to say ‘Let’s impeach Secretary Mayorkas’ because I don’t have that authority in my committee,” he told Dana Bash, host of “State of the Union” on a well-known fake news network. “But what I do have is a responsibility for oversight, and we’re going to do that.”
“We’re going to look very closely at the failures of this administration and Secretary Mayorkas. We’re going to look into his dereliction of duty, the laws he’s intentionally violated and not followed. I mean, he took an oath to the Constitution, right? And his job is to execute the laws, not write them or make them up himself.”
The House HSC chair reiterated that he would be negligent in his job if he did not look into Mayorkas’ performance and show the American people how the secretary has failed. He added that the GOP-controlled House “will show the human cost of this open border, fentanyl mothers [and] Angel Moms,” emphasizing that “every American is at risk with this open border.”
The accusations against Mayorkas came amid a projected surge of illegal immigrants with the end of the Title 42 order on May 11. In response, a DHS spokesperson denounced Green’s allegations. They remarked that instead of pointing fingers and pursuing a baseless impeachment, Congress should work with the DHS and pass legislation to fix America’s broken immigration system that hasn’t been updated in more than 40 years.
The spokesperson reiterated that the DHS will “continue to enforce our laws and secure our border, protect the nation from terrorism [and] improve our cybersecurity – all while building a safe, orderly and humane immigration system.”
