POLL: 55% of American voters believe Tim Walz’s stolen valor is a serious problem

A recent survey shows majority U.S. voters believe the alleged exaggerated military record of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is a serious problem.

According to a Rasmussen Reports survey, conducted on Aug. 12 to 14 among 1,158 likely U.S. voters, 55 percent of the respondents believe that the accusations against Walz are serious, including the 36 percent who consider them “very serious.”

Only 38 percent of the respondents do not believe the accusations are serious, including the 24 percent who consider them “not at all serious.” About 45 percent of these respondents say that these accusations would not affect their vote in the upcoming presidential election in November.

Earlier in August, Walz, who was named the running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris, was accused of exaggerating his military records and misleading the country about his veteran status. Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio accused Walz of misleading the country about his veteran status.

“When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, you know what he did? He dropped out of the Army and allowed his unit to go without him, a fact that he’s been criticized for aggressively by a lot of the people that he served with. I think it’s shameful to prepare your unit to go to Iraq, to make a promise that you’re going to follow through, and then to drop out right before you actually have to go,” Vance told reporters during a campaign rally in Detroit.

Minnesota National Guard revealed Walz’s service record in 2018 published letter

Walz responded to Vance’s allegations during a meeting with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union members in Los Angeles on Aug. 13.

“I firmly believe you should never degenerate another person’s service record,” Walz said. “To anyone brave enough to put on that uniform for our great country, including my opponent, I just have a few simple words – thank you for your service and sacrifice.” (Related: Tim Walz finally responds to his ‘stolen valor’ scandal, and he just made things 1000X worse.)

However, a group of retired Command Sergeants Major from the Minnesota National Guard published a letter in 2018 to reveal the true nature of his service record.

According to the information, Walz reenlisted in the National Guard in 2001 and was selected for the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy in 2003, with the condition that he should serve for two years after graduating or being promoted. He was deployed to Italy in 2003 and later promoted to command sergeant major of his battalion.

In 2005, his battalion received orders for deployment to Iraq, but Walz resigned in May to run for Congress, leaving his unit without senior leadership. His resignation led to his rank being reduced from command sergeant major to master sergeant. His battalion later deployed to Iraq from 2006 to 2007, but soldiers were restricted from speaking against him due to army regulations.

In other words, Walz did not complete the required six-year enlistment or serve the two years following his conditional promotion.
